Thornbury Women's Cricket Club 2023

This season the Women's team has entered two softball leagues and one hardball league - we will aim to share write ups for all of the matches but this week kicks off with League 2.

The first game of the season was away against Coalpit Heath; the sun was shining and everything was set for some great cricket! With new players that have recently joined the TCC Women's team making their debut, there were a few excited nerves. We lost the toss and Coalpit Heath put us in to bat first. We got off to a great start with many runs being scored and not losing any wickets. We continued with great batting from all and only lost 3 wickets in total. We then went out to field and also took 3 wickets, with some excellent bowling. Unfortunately, the passion and strong team encouragement just wasn't enough and whilst the team did their very best, Coalpit Heath had a stronger batting side. However we came away smiling and everyone enjoyed the first game of the season. Ali's celebration of hitting her first 4 was everyone's highlight!

After the first game the team then embarked on another away game against Hanham. Once again it was perfect weather and we had another new player Becky making her debut. Overcoming any nerves and proving her natural ability, Becky bowled her first wicket and stopped many boundaries with some incredible dives out on the field. As always the fielding ability was amazing and played with such enthusiasm and passion. With the team taking 4 wickets we were pipped to the post, with Hanham securing the win. It was another great performance from all.

Not feeling hard done by with the first 2 games we went into a third game still with high spirits, against Hawkesbury, our rivals, who historically have always put up a fight against us. This was our first game at home, and having won the toss we elected to field first. With tensions rising our wickie Hayley G then took the catch of the match with an amazing dive catch behind the stumps. With great batting and fielding we put up a good fight until the bitter end, which made great cricket, with 6's and 4's flying particularly from Nina. Thornbury felt confident, however the game finished with Hawksbury beating us by a really slim margin.

Well done League 2 and special thank you to Will, Jude, Andy and Emily for stepping in to help Umpire and Score for us.

Whilst we have failed to secure a win in the first month, with the continued optimism, enthusiasm and team encouragement, Thornbury continues with a smile, with plenty of laughs and giggles along the way in the first month of the season.

With the passion and strong team effort and laughter, we are looking forward to our next game against (Keynsham) and hopefully landing our elusive first win of the season.
